'94 Michigan Hawks Win Indoor Nationals
The U11 Michigan Hawks won the National Indoor Championship in Cleveland this past weekend. This win makes it 4 in a row... 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005! This year's tournament included teams from MI, OH, VA, NC, IL, and KS. The 3 bracket winners were all from Michigan -- the Michigan Hawks, the Michigan Gators and the Canton Quest. The wildcard winner was NLA from North Carolina.
The Hawks beat the Canton Quest in the semi-finals 6-2, and came up against the Gators once again in the finals (last year the Hawks beat them in the finals). It was a great rematch, with a huge crowd watching, and the score went back and forth. But, in the end, the Hawks beat them 5-4 to take home the Championship.

A sophomore at Indiana and a current member of the Under 20 U.S. National Team, Peterson struck on a first half breakaway to give his Hoosiers the lead. This served as the perfect follow up to Jacob's stellar freshman season which culminated in his being named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player. U14: Hawks relentless in 4 -1 win over Team Chicago Pizazz
Showing total intensity for the duration of the match, Tim Ernst's Hawks took the WAGS Cup title and added yet more silverware to the club's burgeoning trophy case.
Hawks, much bigger overall than their Chicago opponents had a boatload of chances in the first half but only led 1-0 on an Ashley Racette volley. Ernst noted the game was far from lopsided "I think you are always concerned when you play a team as good as them and when you don't finish your own chances. That team was going to get chances and it's one of those things that's a bit scary," he said. "As the second half started they began taking the play to us. It was just a matter of trying to hang on and hopefully get some more chances."
Team Chicago's Casey Short was dangerous on the break and she successfully chipped Hawks keeper Chelsea Shrewsbury late in the first half, only for the ball to go wide. Shrewsbury made a good save on another drive by Erin Jacobsen. Early in the 2nd half, the fantastically-skilled Brianne Rodriguez (who along with Short and Leah Fortune made a great forward trio for Pizazz) sent a drive off the crossbar, before Erin Jacobsen, hit a good shot for Pizazz that was saved by 2nd half keeper Whitney Sarkis. Rodriguez then sent a great feed to Short, who shot just wide.
That effort served as a wakeup call for Hawks, who began to apply the pressure again. Samantha Echols stole a ball in the Chicago end, had her shot blocked and then put the rebound just over.
Emily Jaffe then scored a fantastic goal, running into space and hitting a vicious drive from 25 yards out that left the keeper with no chance. While Hawks very vocal supporters were still celebrating, Sloane Levin produced a good turn and long-range shot that also found the back of the net to make 3-0.
The outcome seemed no longer in doubt but Pizazz continued to work and the effort paid off when Rodriguez was pulled down in the box for a penalty. Erin Jacobsen converted the PK to make it 3-1.
Hawks, which lost in the Michigan State Cup last weekend, weren't done
working either however, and Kristen Goncalves went on a 50-yard run with
the ball, beating two players and then the keeper to make it 4-1.

Marin’s Gage Hills scored in the 56th minute, with Kamani Hill following in the 66th. Michigan Wolves Head Coach Lars Richters and Marin United Head Coach Rick Fullerton met long before the championship match – the two were college teammates and friends while at Yale University.
The U18 Michigan Wolves won the 2003 Snickers Midwest Regional Championships on June 25 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Wolves, coached by Lars Richters and Kevin Callaway, defeated the 2001 U16 National Champions, the Chicago Sockers, in the championship game. The Wolves faced a 2-0 deficit late in the second half, but they came back in dramatic fashion. J.T. Katikos scored from outside the penalty area, and Brian Popeney soon followed with a direct free kick to tie the score with five minutes remaining. Severe thunderstorms interrupted the action for several hours, and when the game resumed, the Wolves fought off a brutal Sockers attack for the last five minutes of regulation time. The drama continued in overtime, as goalkeeper Jason Tillman made several key saves. Finally, David Williams got on the end of a Brian Popeney cross and headed home the “golden goal.”
The Wolves advanced to the finals by beating national powerhouse Scott Gallagher from St. Louis, Missouri by a score of 3-1. The Wolves came from behind on goals by J.T. Katikos, Bain Rumohr, and Matt Konopinski. Nik Djokic contributed two assists, and David Williams assisted on the third goal. The Wolves won their preliminary group by defeating all three of their opponents. The tournament opened with a 3-0 win over the Internationals/Cleveland Football Club (Ohio North). Kevin Savitskie, Nik Djokic, and Matt Konopinski scored goals for the Wolves. In the second game, the Wolves fought off a tough Minnesota Wings team by a score of 2-1. J.T. Katikos scored both goals, one in each half, and Brian Popeney drew both assists. Finally, the Wolves faced a must-win situation against Cincinnati United Premier Red (Ohio South) in the final pool game. Matt Konopinski opened the scoring on an assist from Brian Popeney, and John Pizanis followed on a pass from Nik Djokic. J.T. Katikos added an unassisted, insurance goal in injury time, when he carried the ball 60 yards, ran past three defenders, and finally dribbled around the rushing goalkeeper.
The U18 Wolves now head to Germantown, Maryland for the USYSA National Championships on July 22 – 27. Their opponents will be the Syracuse Blitz Blizzard (New York West), the Tulsa Nationals FC (Oklahoma), and Marin United (California North). The team roster appears below:
